Hi.
Although you may have bought the battery only six months ago, the battery may be much older than that. The answers given by the previous responders are all correct, but I would like to add another response. Depending upon the type of battery that you are using you may have created a 'charge window' (sometimes also called a 'charge memory') in the battery. This mostly happens with Nickel Cadmium ("NiCad") batteries, but can happen with other types, but much less often. This occurs when a battery is only charged and discharged over a small range of its capacity. This includes batteries that may not be used often but get a long recharge regularly. This 'window' can eventually prevent the battery from charging, due to massive internal resistance issues.

It's not unheard of that laptop batteries become dead after a certain length of time. If it's still within your computer manufacturer's warranty, you can get them to replace it for free. There could also be a problem with the laptop in that it's not letting you charge your battery correctly. Another issue that should be covered by the warranty.

Check your manufacturer's website for support and let them know about your situation.

Laptop batteries are like mobile phone batteries - you have to charge them for 24 hours on their first charge to get them into action. If you didn't do that, your battery will not perform properly. You may need to buy another battery & start again.

Batteries only have a certain number of charges before they wear out. They can also be damaged if they are discharged too far. Heat is also very bad for lithium-ion batteries. If your laptop runs hot, that could be partially responsible. It is also a bad idea to charge hot batteries.

Laptop battery failures are actually quite common. Certain brands and models tend to fail prematurely. Send it back to your dealer and get a replacement.
