In the last year or two of the X-Files show (when Agent Doggett was in the episodes), during sad scenes involving Scully, there was some background music which was almost like gospel. A very sad, mournful singing (solo singer). I know Mark Snow did most of the music for the show, but I can't find anything about this particular music. Any advice?

I think you may be talking about "Scully's Theme" and it's by Mark Snow. I am not completely sure that you are referring to that though, because I don't think it sounds like gospel, but otherwise, it fits your description. I don't know if that is the official title or not but that is what it is known by. Have you checked the credits at the end of the episodes where you have heard it? They had to have put who the singer was in the credits. I have seen it on Myspace. There is a link to it below. From what I can tell it's not on any albums because I saw a fan site where they are petitioning for its release:

I don't know why; it's nice music that goes well with the episodes but I wouldn't want to walk around listening to it.

It seems like all the mournful singing surrounding Scully occurred whenever the theme of the show was her pregnancy, particularly Mulder's involvement in it and her mourning over his absence. If you notice they play the same music frequently during season 8 for those themes: in the premiere "Within", when she was staring at herself in the mirror, when she experienced morning sickness, and when she went to Mulder's apartment and fell asleep on his bed; in "Without", when she was in the dark field looking for Mulder; it was played in "Per Manum" where Mulder appeared in flashbacks; and in the finale "Existence" when she and Mulder were holding their baby. I think they played it some in between too. As sad as it was that Mulder was gone throughout most of season 8, I think that it was one of the best ones because of how Scully's character had added depth and dimension, and her theme music contributed to the mood of those episodes. I don't recall that it was played at all during season 9 but I think the show always had great background music. My boyfriend doesn't like the X-Files but he always comments on how good the music is when he hears me watching it.
