If you eat too fast, you can swallow air along with your food and end up with a case of the hiccups.
Any other practices that might irritate the diaphragm such as eating too much (especially fatty foods) or drinking too much (drunk people hiccup) can make you prone to having hiccups.
In these instances, your stomach, which sits underneath and adjacent to the diaphragm, is distended or stretched. Because they occur in relation to eating and drinking, hiccups are sometimes thought to be a reflex to protect you from choking.

occilations in the diaphragm... usually cause by something like fizzy pop, (inc lager) or ive had em after a mouthful of rather hot chilli...
easy way to stop em, breathe in, in short small breaths...and hold it..and breathe in some more.. and again... and gently release it...
take a wee bit of practice and a HIC in the middle means start again...but it does work... believe me.

As said air-
I can give you a great way to get rid of them-
Stand with your back against the wall straight as can be, put your chin to your chest and breathe out through your nose as slow and long as you can. It works.
