I need to cover myself at work. My recordings would never be used to legally fire anyone, just prove that the actions of others are frosty and denigrating towards me. In California, is this legal??
Anyone help before I get fired?

Though it's probably not legal, there certain instances where it has been submittable. No one is ever going to give you permission to record them being discriminatory towards you, and in a worse case scenario, if that's what you have to do to prove your case then I'd say do it.... BUT
as someone said in a previous answer.. be careful, you can be sued.
Before you take the route of recording someone though.....
If it's your boss that is being ignorant to you, does he have a boss that's higher then him? If so file a complaint to the person that is higher then the person that is harassing you. After you've filed a complaint they can't fire you, because then you can turn around and sue them. My husband went through the same thing at work... down to wanting to tape the person that was harassing him, and in the end he filed a complaint to HR department, and the situation was handled without anyone loosing their job.

It is not legal to record another person without their consent. You could be sued, possibly fired and your credibility and trustworthiness for future jobs gone.

Usually it is not. Most larger companies also have information and technology security programs where it is against company policy to bring in tape recorders at work. (They don't want you sharing priviledged information with competitors.)
