The charge tells you how much energy is stored in the electric field that surrounds the particle. Neutrons have no electric field. But they have other kinds of energy.
Actually a neutron carries even more energy then a proton, that's why it has more mass.

You can think of a neutron as a combination of an electron and a proton. It has energy, but the charge is neutral.
