Kip Thorn made a very book about black holes.

A black hole is black because light can not escape from it. It marks the horizon of the black hole (chandrasekhar limit). At the center of this black area, there a point with a very great mass, several times the one of our sun. The mass of the black hole determine is type.
If an object aproach the horizon of the black hole, it is attracted more and more, and tide effect become greater up to the point that the object breaks.

gravity becomes very strong so it gets denser and denser.the black hole sucks in everything which comes near it.Even light cannot escape out of it.
