Anything is creepy if you never quite show it or never quite say what it is. I'd go with vampires, because I've always been creeped out by them. If you want to do something I'm not sure has ever been done, you can have it be a were-tiger, were-panther, or were-jaguar, because although those exist in mythology, people always use lycanthropes. A new animal would be more interesting, I think.

..ok..pretend youre camping....and youre all in your tents and the campfire is down to an ember...you hear something in the leaves coming towards you....you can see a huge silouhette against your tent and you hear heavy breathing and an absolutley terrible smell....and you unzip your tent just a hair to catch a glimpse of whats in your camp....and it turns out to be...ROSIE O'DONELL
