If the laptop completely powers off(lcd, lights, fans, everything cuts as if loss of power) then it is probably heat related.

If the power remains on, then it is probably a software issue or failing hardware.

As mentioned above you should keep that laptop on a hard flat surface away from dust. Leaving a laptop on carpet, a couch, your lap, a blanket, etc. is a horrible idea unless it is turned off. The reason is that amount of hair and dust that is sucked into the laptop. It will get to the point where there is no airflow and the parts cannot be cooled, resulting in a thermal shutdown.

In other words, your laptop could very well be clogged with dust and needs to be pulled apart. Take it to a local computer shop or someone that has experience building/repairing computers(preferrably laptops) and ask them to remove the heatsink and blast it with compressed air. I've done this for countless friends who have had the same problem you do. Works every time.

One thing you should not is that disassembling your laptop voids the warranty if there still is one. I assumed that since you are coming here that your warranty has expired. If it has not, contact your dealer and have them fix/replace it.

Make sure it's on a hard surface with plenty of ventilation space underneath the laptop. Make sure it's used in open space so airflow can keep it cool.

Simple, your battery needs to be replaced, take your laptop to the nearest service centre, if you got a warranty you'll not be charged!

If it's connected to the internet, it could be a virus or spyware or the ac adapter could have a short.
