i want to add more RAM in the two available slots in my pc. its ddr2 with support for pc2 5300 and 4200 speeds. currently the first pairing is 2 256 mb and i wanted to add a GB pairing (2 512 mb), giving a total of 1.5gig. can i do this or does the 2nd pairing have to be the same capacity as the first???

yes you can do that.... only the pairs have to match.... adding RAM is so awesome.... i have 2.5 gb of ram in my dell.... started with 512 mb and i bought 1 gb and 1 gb and i love it......i might even upgrade some more... switch the two 256 to 1 gb each... for a total of 4 GB of RAM.....

No, I believe that they only have to be the same capacity as each other.
You will need to match the speeds, if they are pc4200 then they all have to be that.

You will notice an improvement right away. You can also check your System to see if it reflects the new memory.

I'll bet it tells you in your computer instruction book that came with the computer. Some do, some don't.
