Return is to take and give back and turn-in is to give what is already yours.

umm for school I had to turn in reports. if I borrowed a shirt from a friend I had to return it.

I'd write it out the difference but I'm too tired.

Turn in means you submit something permanently that did belong to you, such as turning in an assignment or your keys if you leave a place. To return means to give back something that was someone elses that you borrowed temporarily or to come back to the original place.

turn in is when you go to bed, or drop a dime on your homey.
return is getting 2 cent for a pop bottle
