I just recently had high speed hooked up and I remember the tech told me he had to disconnect my dialup card, could this have anything to do with the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

If you have REALTEK AC'97 onboard audio and you installed the updated driver from somewhere on the internet, you've broken it to the point of HAVING to reinstall windows. There is no other way. I've seen this problem many times and I'm not kidding. The new "driver" is actually a virus that remains unidentified to this day.

Back up your personal files. Then format and reinstall windows. Never use that REALTEK driver ever again.

If you previously had a modem installed that had Modem Wave installed, and you removed the card from the machine, this could potentially create a problem, but I doubt it. Assuming it did, you would need to remove every device from the sound, video, and game controllers section of Device Manager that are no longer installed. You may have to set system Restore Points after each removal and reboot. Yes, you would need to reboot after each removal and see if there were any devices that were no longer working that were previously.

Once you remove those items that could possibly be fouling up the audio subsystem, upon reboot, Windows should find your hardware and (re)install the correct driver.

It would really help to have more info, such as a list of the things in the sound devices section of Device manager, or the name of your audio card (make AND model). Without all of the relevant information, this would be the best assistance you can hope to find without taking the computer to a technician who can solve your problem more quickly than someone with half the information attempting to do so blindly over the internet.

The Dial-up Modem should not be your only sound device. You should have an audio card or at least audio built into the motherboard. You may need to reinstall the drivers for your "sound device"

Even if the phone line is unplugged from your computer the modem card is still installed. So something else is wrong.
