1969. Jim Lovell and crew played it in the Apollo 13 command capsule "Odyssey" on April 12 1970.

1970, I graduated high school that year and just heard it on music channel '70's'!!!! He quit the business in 1967? and opened a dairy farm ( I don't know how the song was made in 1970 if he was milking cows but....)

it was a hit in 1970, and the only one her ever had.
although this song has been covered 1000 times, so he's probably living quite nicely from the residuals... (if he's still alive...but that's another question)

Loved that song as a kid and wrote my uncle in Viet Nam to name their anti aircraft gun that and they did so around 70 I would think don't know the excact date.
