Does't harm the battery but could damage the computer on your car if you must try and swap batteries.Don't understand why they make things like this guess its to drum up buiseness.

I've heard it can damage the computer, but I've never seen it happen. Just make sure the cables are put on correctly, and in the correct sequence, and start the good car before starting the dead one - the alternator puts out a lot more power than the battery, especially if your battery is already trying to charge up the dead one (which is what it tries ti do when you hook the cars together).
