Smelled a faint but clear gas odor in furnace area last night. Called gas co., they found no leaks. Since then, furnace will come on, but only blow cold air. It has no pilot light - it's an electrically controlled mechanism, apparently. There is still a gas smell, though our gas fireplace works fine.

The gas is working - the fireplace uses gas, and runs fine. The igniter switch sounds like a good answer - I'll check that.

Check if your electronic lighter is functioning. They do wear out. I had one that looked like it was ceramic; sometimes it would crack & need replacement. The faint odor of gas could be when the furnace cycles; feeds gas to the pilot & then shuts off when it doesn't ignite...for safety purposes. Also, make sure the gas co did not shut off the gas supply line to the furnace when they checked for leaks. Too bad they didn't stick around to make sure it was functioning.
Hope it's not as cold there as it is here....Northern Missouri with wind chills of -10 to -20 F.

Furnaces are one element that i do not imagine should be dealt with via the do-it-yourselfer. Please call a furnace restore corporation. it isn't well worth dropping your position or existence over purely to save some money. M
