Being from Drogheda in Ireland, supposedly the former capital of Ireland as it was the busiest port until the whole relocation to Dublin thing. I believe that Liverpool had a grander role in Englands past, being a prime port city, until both Drogheda and Liverpool suffered from dread politics and were shoved by the wayside in favour of a more politically correct ahem city.

Liverpool grew because it was well placed as a port close to the industrial centre of England so goods for export could easily be moved to ships and imported raw materials landed close to their markets. That's why it was one of the centres of the British slave trade.
