I had a regular black molly fish and today just added a "large" black molly but it's only like 1/2 in. better (if that)..
My first molly used to be so active and ever since the new one came along, all they are doing seems to look like mating???
I dont know what gender each were or how to tell if it is a female or male...
Any suggestions...

This could be a male picking on a male. My white male picks on my smaller dalmation male and it irritates the heck out of me.

A female will be rounder than a male. Males have a gondopodium, a specialized anal fin shaped like a rod. This is their penis. This allows mollies to have live young. When she is gravid(expecting) she will have a dark spot by her anal fin. On black mollies, this would be impossible to see. :) Females have a fan-shape anal fin. Males will terrorize females for days, especially when she is expecting. They will swarm around her actually trying to eat the babies as they come out! Some parents!

Mollies will eat their babies, so when and if you do get them, remove them to a smaller tank(a one gallon with a air filter in it works wonders) to save them.

You want to buy more mollies ( 3 to 4 inches.). There are many different colors. You can also do some Platys ( 3 to 4 inches) as well. Rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. You don't want to do more then 5 or 6 in the tank. Also if your molly that you have has a pencil point on its belly its a male and if it has a round fin on its belly its a female. You want 3 to 4 females for every Male. They mate very easily but they will eat their babies. So either get a breeders net or fill your tank with plants and hiding places. If they have babies you will also need to provide the babies with fry food. They will be to small to eat the parents tropical flakes. As far as cleaning the tank you want to do a 25% water change once a month and clean the gravel as well. Every time you add water make sure you add water conditioner to your tank to take out the chlorine. You want to keep the PH at 7.0 and the water temp. between 70 and 75*. Also a 20 gallon Aqua Clear filter will help keep your tank clean and clear. Go to your local Pet Smart or PetCo and bring a water sample with you to make sure all your levels are ok before adding more fish.

If it's just been a day, then i highly doubt they are breeding. If you just want to know the difference between males and females is their dorsal fin. The male has a sail-like fin and the female has a smaller dorsal fin. Just allow them to be together. It's possible but highly unlikely that they will fight. The older molly may just not be used to company or may be observing the new molly.

Males have an anal fin that is pointed for insertion into the female, females have a normal looking fin. IF the "male" can direct the anal fin forward as he jabs at the female, you have a pair. Leave them alone...they are doing what they do.

If you have a male and a female, you may want to get another female. The male's are very active and will bother the female and possibly kill it.
