A cell phone is named for the cellular network in which it functions

A cellular network is a radio network made up of a number of radio cells (or just cells) each served by a fixed transmitter ("tower"). The small areas served by each transmitter, when plotted on a map, are reminiscent of biological cells: adjacent, connected, and communicating.

OK?

Because the portable radio telephone, which are also called mobile telephones, work in a system of radio towers in the United States. The towers have limited ranges, but are coordinated by computers. When your 'cell' phone is within range of a tower it is in a 'cell' that picks up your cell phone's radio transmission and relays it to the system. As you move around with your cell phone the system trades your signal from cell to cell (tower to tower) allowing for your conversation to go on even while moving from place to place.
