Is the family of an elderly family member resposible for that family member's(in nursing home) debt?

Elderly mother, 6 grown kids, do we have to pay her debts, when she is broke and in nursing home? The other kids think we have to pay for the nursing home/old bills (phone, medical), but I don't think we do.

Unless you signed paper work accepting responsibility, legally no.
Your mother may be evicted tho for non-payment, so perhaps your siblings are thinking in terms of her still having a place to stay,
then yes, you will have to pay
(or someone will if you do not want her evicted)
