There are five types of bones in the human body, not three.

-Long bones are longer than they are wide, consisting of a long shaft (the diaphysis) plus two articular (joint) surfaces, called epiphyses. They are comprised mostly of compact bone, but are generally thick enough to contain considerable spongy bone and marrow in the hollow centre (the medullary cavity). Most bones of the limbs (including the three bones of the fingers) are long bones, except for the kneecap (patella), and the carpal, metacarpal, tarsal and metatarsal bones of the wrist and ankle. The classification refers to shape rather than the size.

-Short bones are roughly cube-shaped, and have only a thin layer of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. The bones of the wrist and ankle are short bones, as are the sesamoid bones.

-Flat bones are thin and generally curved, with two parallel layers of compact bones sandwiching a layer of spongy bone. Most of the bones of the skull are flat bones, as is the sternum.

-Irregular bones do not fit into the above categories. They consist of thin layers of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. As implied by the name, their shapes are irregular and complicated. The bones of the spine and hips are irregular bones.

-Sesamoid bones are bones embedded in tendons. Since they act to hold the tendon further away from the joint, the angle of the tendon is increased and thus the force of the muscle is increased. Examples of sesamoid bones are the Patella and the Pisiform

Types of Bones

Long bones are long and skinny. Some examples would be the bones in your arms, legs, and fingers.

Short bones are short and chunky. These are the bones found in your ankles or wrists.

Flat bones include your ribs and shoulder blades. They are the plate-like bones.

Irregular bones are the bones that don't fit in the three categories listed above. They are the odd shaped bones such as the bones of the vertebrate and the bones inside your ear. Bones are very much alive. 30% of the bone is living tissue. 25% of the bone is made of water. The red blood cells in your body is actually made by your bones in a special soft tissue called marrow.

Bones are very strong for their weight. The centers of the long bones in your body are hollow. This shape provides lightness and a place for blood marrow, which produces the red blood cells your body needs.

The bones in your body are connected with different types of joints. They allow your body to move in several different ways.

There are 206 bones in the body and each one does a very specific job.
You don't have to know them all, only the major ones.
Remember that bones protect and support

The skull
The skull protects the brain

The ribs.
The ribs protect the heart and lungs and other vital organs of the body.

The spine (backbone)
The spine is not really one bone it is lots of little bones that work together to protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord runs from the brain to the base of your spine. The spinal cord is the nerve that sends all the messages to the brain.

The pelvis (hip bones)
The pelvis protects the womb (in females) and the legs join the upper body at the pelvis.

Femur (thigh bone)
This is the biggest bone in your body. This bone runs from your hip to your knee.

We have said that all your bones are joined together to make a skeleton.
However these bones are joined in 3 main ways. They have different types of joints.

Think about the way you can move your lower leg. It will swing backwards and forwards but it will not turn round.
Think of the way you can move you arm it can swing and can move in many directions.
The joint at your knee is different from the way that your arms are jointed.

Most of the time, the "3 bone types" are:

1) Long bones. These are bones that are long, such as the femur or humerus.

2) Short bones. These are bones that are short, such as metatarsals or phalanges.

3) Irregular bones. These are bones that are irregular, such as vertebrae.

Under this system, flat bones and sesamoid bones are considered to be types of irregular bones.
