He's a very healthy guppy (maybe), but recently he has been floating vertically in the tank with his tail on the stones. He swims around fine, and he's eating, but when he stops moving, his head goes up and he "stands" vertically in the tank. I just got another guppy 2 days ago, and he does it too....is this just a guppy thing? Or is something wrong with the water, fish, etc?

I would bet on it being a swim bladder disease. Those are usually very difficult to cure and once it has become this bad practically impossible to cure.

Hate to give you bad news, but you should probably expect the worst and plan on replacing the guppies in the near future.

1st- check your water condtions...
you need a heater- and it should be set at 72 degrees F
you need a filter- to help assist in getting all the crap out
you need to do a 25% water change each week
take a cup of your water down to a pet store and get it tested, see what the pH is at, see what the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are at
2nd- if it is swim bladder disease ( have hope, theres always hope) stop feeding them regular food for 3-5 days. in the mean time, feed them fresh peas that have the skins taken off. if it doesnt help within 5 days then there is no hope.
any more questions? email me.

fish standing on their tails is usually caused by poor water quality -- too much ammonia or nitrites. change large amounts of water frequently and the fish should improve.

That's typical of nitrite poisoning.
