Record him. then play it back to him a few days later. That works for all but the most tone deaf. If they still don't get it, talk about the person on the tape being a bad singer. If he doesn't recognize his own voice, have someone else tell you to "be quiet, the kid is right there!"

Why is it your business whether he is a good singer or not? Furthermore, what credentials do you have that give you the background to judge whether he has the potential to be a good singer or not? You might end up just crushing his interest in singing before he has a chance to develop his voice.

By using the word "kid" you are also suggesting his voice hasn't changed yet. Once his voice changes, he might develop a better singing voice.

In summary, don't tell him. Not your business.

Wouldn't bother if I were you, however I've always been told I can't sing. Ever since I was asked to mime at my infant school carol concert when I was 5, I didn't believe it though, recently my 21 year old daughter asked me "Do you realise that everytime you sing God kills a kitten and all the flowers die?" I think I get the message now, Don't think it will stop me though but maybe I'll save it for when I.m driving and alone.

In a British accent: "If I'm being honest, you sound like a cat going through a meat grinder. That was the most HIDEOUS performance I've ever heard in my life."

No use telling such people. The will think you envy... let him sing in the public and he will understand, if he is clever enough.
