Let's let Wikipedia answer that one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia
Basically, it's a collaborative free encyclopedia written by users, and its scope is nearly limitless. For instance, your set of Britannicas might not even have an entry for quadrature amplitude modulation, but Wikipedia has pages upon pages of useful information about it.
The downside to Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it, and this results in some articles being vandalized, written from a biased viewpoint, or deleted. However, Wikipedia has thousands of people dedicated to keeping it up to a very, very high set of standards, so a poorly written or vandalized article will usually be fixed within hours or even minutes.
All in all, it's a marvelous resource for learning about nearly anything, but if you were writing a paper you'd need to fact-check Wikipedia's information against its sources. Thankfully, most Wikipedia articles cite their sources very precisely, so fact-checking is rarely much of a headache.

Wikipedia is a multilingual, Web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers; with rare exceptions, its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Web site. The name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia.

It's an online encyclopedia that users ( people like us) can updated and make article entries. If you post a crappy entry other people from all over th world will criticize your post.
I like it, I've never had a bad experience using it.
and it's free. and you often get some really good pictures off of it and you can quickly cut-and-paste bits of it and attach it to emails, essays and other forums
