You are probably referring to EgyptAir flight 990 which crashed into the sea off Nantucket, Massachusetts. That was pretty mysterious. The copilot, a Muslim, may have decided to sacrifice himself to kill some Israelis; or, they forgot to oil the stabilizers.

I believe it was Swissair Flight 111 that exploded in flight in 1998 off the coast of Canada. It took a long time to recover and assemble the pieces so the actual investigation could begin.
