I have three train rides that stand out in my memory.
The first is the "Petit Train Jaune" (Little Yellow Train) in the French Pyrenees, that climbs ever higher up astonishing mountainsides, ending up at the highest station in France. Some of the original rolling stock from 1910 is still in operation.
The second is the Soller Railway on Majorca, that runs from the capital Palma through the mountains to the town of Soller, followed by the tram ride to the port of Soller. Again, the ancient rolling stock is half the fun, but the scenery is stunning.
But the longest by far comes from the 1970s when I took a train ride across America from east to west, and then - via a different route - from west to east. The variety of the scenery and people made it truly memorable.
As well as the mountains, deserts and prairies, there were odd little unexpected things like seeing flat, metal disks set in the ground, surrounded by barbed wire, in the middle of the barren nowhere that is North Dakota - which turned out to be Minutemen missile silos! Or sitting for twenty minutes in the station in Pendleton, Oregon, watching a rodeo taking place next door. Or getting off the train at Laramie and being greeted by a barber's shop quartet in full flow. Or sitting up in a dome car (the carriages with raised domes on top for sightseeing) and watching the presence of a mouse cause mass panic among the passengers...
I'd strongly recommend anyone to try out all three.

Two journeys last summer, both in North Wales. One which travels up one side of Lake Bala. It has a platform ticket machine which uses OLD pennies only! You get the pennies from the counter for 20p, put them in the machine and it issues a real platform ticket to keep as a souvenir.
The other was on a train up Mount Snowden. It's awesome - the train just goes up and up and you think you can't go any higher and you do! The views on a clear day from the top are amazing. There's a cafe at the top as well.

I visited UK last year in june;I put put up in Newcastle upon Tyne in the Northumbria university campus where my father had some research going on.One day,we made out for a train ride to Edinburgh from Newcasle on one of the GNER trains;for me it was the best train ride ever through the scottish valleys, dotted with sheep and cattle and with very few houses coming up sometimes from nowhere-a long cry from the train rides here in India, where although we have such scenaries in some of our hill stations, you can't really enjoy it being jammed with so many other people breathing upon you. So,for me, it was the best train ride so far.
