book it yourself in advance with LOT polish airlines, they fly non stop from New York (and probably Chicago) to Warsaw, and on to Krakow...the conneciton is only another hour flight and usually not a long wait in Warsaw.

I dont think there is non stop from Chicago to Krakow...you'd have to either stop somewhere in the US or Europe first even with the same airline.

when I flew to Poland in January 04 I paid less than $500 one way...from JFK

Otherwise United has a lot of cheap flights but going through Germany with a long layover 5 hours

Of course there is non-stop plane service from Chicago O'Hare to Krakow Balice. Its really cheap around this time about $350 round trip from one person. During the summer/Christmas the price could reach over $1000 round trip per person. It is a bit cheaper flying Lufthansa or United from Chicago O'Hare to Munich and then connecting to Krakow. Altough it might only be $200 cheaper per person and I personally don't think its worth going through the conection process.

fly with lot.com. I recommend their business class, bit more expensive then coach, but a superb service. Vodka will flow like water and by the time you will land, you shall forget all about your problems, hehe.
One thing to remember, if you or any members of your family are big, you will have a hard time to find clothes. And if you're a plus size or your husband, people will stare. Made me verry uncomfortable, 6'11", 400lbs. Otherwise, I believe, you will have a verry beautifull trip.
To rent a car, i Recommend autoeurope.com . rentals in Poland, are verry expensive. Try the lease back program from Peugot if you're travelling for more then 20 days.
