Hard floors throughout the house but carpet in the bedrooms. Hard floors are easier to keep clean.

Hard wood floors. Much easier to keep clean.
If you have linoleum instead of hardwood or carpet, that is the easiest to keep clean.
I have cats, and have not liked carpet for many years because of the cats. Carpets can hide fleas, carpet beetles, spiders, lice, and other pests. With hardwood or linoleum, there is no hiding.

Besides it's so much easier for the cats to have fun on hardwood floors. They love sliding around.

Hard floors look nicer, but carpeted floors seem to help insulate in the winter.

Hard wood floors are very nice in the right setting and you can always carpet them if you change your mind later.
