I think the original message was along the lines of "Don't just go around sleeping with everyone, make a connection, make a committment, for the sake of any possible children" I haven't been legally married to all the men I've been with (don't think I'm a tart, there are only a few!) but I've been married to them in my heart. I've had a comittment to them, I've loved them, and I think that's all God meant. After all, the actual marriage ceremony is only a couple of millenia old, and you can't tell me that all the people who were together before that are in hell?
It's a sin to be promiscuous. It's a sin to take God's gift of love and pleasure for granted by sharing it with any Joe Bloggs you meet.
In my opinion marriage is a state of mind, and if you have that serious comittment to someone, what you do with them is your own business. The church I used to belong to wrote me letters abusing me for living in sin, judging me and actually saying they had the right to judge me. After teaching me for years that the bible says that no-one has the right to judge other than God himself. Organised religion is just a bunch of busy-bodies with nothing better to do. Make peace with God yourself, and look honestly at what you're doing. If you're happy with it and it's not hurting anyone, do it.

Sex in itself is not a sin; it is how it is used as I undertand Christian theology. However, all human beings are born in a state of sin (not necessarily related to sex). I think the notion is that when you are born you are at a distance from god, but you need to realise this and try to re-estaoush the relationship; even then you are not free from sin, but by admiting god's grace you are acceopting go'ds forgiveness for your sins (with the promise that you will try to avoid them in the future). Original sin is more about man's nature than any act I believe.
Th problem of human history versus Biblical history us a problem as long as you take the creation myth literally. A conscious will is necessary to do wrong or right, supposedly, and in prehistory, when our ancestors were animals, this intellectual choice was not available.
That's how I understand it anyway.

1. Sex wasn't the original sin. If you look at the biblical text, you will see that Adam and Eve messed up by eating fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil - THAT was the original sin. From my perspective, a baptism is really a symbolic act, which is meant to show that you are being "reborn" as someone who has made a commitment to God and living a "godly" way of life. Think about it - how can water wash away sin?
2. When they say you need to become a child of God, I really think they mean you need to show a commitment to God and living your life in accordance with his wishes.
3. See #1 for my explanation of original sin.
4. The bible never talked about Adam and Eve getting married. However, I think it was clear that Adam and Eve had a commitment - Eve was supposedly created to be Adam's helpmate. Perhaps there was no need for such "formalities" at the time. Additionally, marriage is a SOCIAL CONSTRUCT created by humans, likely as a way of bringing structure to their society as the number of humans increased. It is a legal contract that records a binding commitment between two people. In the Christian Greek scriptures (new testament), there is a scripture that talks about paying back Caesar's things to Caesar. I've always interpreted that to mean that God's followers need to act in accordance with the laws established by human societies. If marriage is a contract (Caesar-style) and God's followers need to act in accordance with Caesar's laws (e.g., get married to show your commitment), then maybe this is something to consider.
Aside from that, you have to remember that the biblical texts were written by humans, supposedly inspired by God. Humans are not devoid of their social context, so they probably incorporated these various social constructs into their writing, therefore distinguishing between fornication (sex before of marriage), adultery (sex with someone other than your marriage partner), and so forth.
5. I didn't touch your question on evolution. Honestly, I'm not sure how it fit into your overall question. Also, I'm not sure Christianity has come up with a truly plausible way to integrate evolution with their creationist beliefs.

The "Holy" people are only holy in their own minds...
God actually said...
" No one is righteous, no not one, ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
That was the reason Jesus was brought down into flesh and died... then as a living example overcame death and suffering as an example. To cover sin for those who ask and to teach as a Rabbi, men to do the same for themselves...
God also said...
"Sin is only sin unto a man, unless he believes it to be sin."
Paul said... "Wretched man that I am, that which I will to do, I do not do, that which I will not to do, is what I do."
That is why we accept jesus and also why we repent, it is a choice... Not something that those who claim to be "holy" should ever force on anyone.
God understands that these so called "Holy" people are only that way because they accepted Christ... That is THE ONLY difference between people in a state of non acceptance and those who have asked for His salvation.
They are no better than you! God said so!
and most importantly... God also said...
" I chose to love the least of these." Meaning those who have yet to come... NOT those who only believe they are Holy for any other reason than the sacrifice His Son made for all of us equally...

One thing to remember about the bible is that it may be, if it even is, divinely inspired at it's origins but once humans started to write, translate, and re-write it I believe it is an error to call it the pure word of God, if you even believe in him/her/it. Most functunalists believe in a word by word literal translation of the bible but they fail to realize that it has been altered by humans since the day it was first written. I look at the bible as a book of metaphors that also provides us with some great tips on how to live life. It's unfortunate that so many bible thumpers get dragged down on stuff like gay bashing that they forget that one of the 10 commandments is to love thy neighbor. It doesn't say, love thy neighbor unless they are a ___fill in the blank____. The Christian religion at it's core is supposed to be a religion of love and forgivenes, not about condemnation.
Back to one of your main points though, pre-marital sex was deemed a sin because it carries the risk of causing problems. One such problem is having a child and then not having a family to raise that child in. However, in the modern era pre-marital sex actually has benifits as long as you go about it safely. To look at it in a religious fashion, sex is supposed to be the unity of two souls. Unfortunately two souls don't always unite well and it's best to find this out before getting married to someone that isn't compatible.

Seriously it's just the way it is. Who are you to question God? Ha ha sorry I had to. Like I said it's just the way it is why mess with tradition? Just like thanksgiving: if people are complaining about obesity then why have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years right after one another the holidays are tradition....who are we to question our ancestors who thought a little differently than us? We weren't there so we have no right to say that their way of living and thinking was wrong.
