The best is an untrasonic humidifier, but it is also the most expensive.
Both hot and cold vaporizers do a good job of increasing the humidity. A cold vaporizer throws a fine mist into the room, much of which vaporizes, but some comes down as tiny water droplets that can wet a blanket or a carpet underneath. It can also accumulate mold if you do not wash it out with a dilute chlorine bleach every few days.
A hot vaporizer puts out steam and water vapor that is less likely to wet surrounding clothing, but too much steam will condense and give you a similar problem. Older steam vaporizers were hazardous if tipped over, potentially scalding the infant. Newer ones have safety switches if tipped, and heat a smaller quantity of water. Nevertheless, put it in a place secure from falling over.

Do they even make cold ones?
A hot vaporizer is amazing. I've been using one for the last week because the air in my room as been really dry. It's helped me sleep a lot better and wake up feeling good.
I have a cold now, so last night, I put some liquid vicks in it and I slept like a baby all night long.

Hot helps break up the mucus to help relieve cold symptoms better. If you are afraid of a child touching it and getting burned go buy some of those Vick Vapor plugs. I have one that I keep plugged in next to my 2 year-old's bed when he has a cold.

I think hot works better for general colds and flu but cold humidifiers work better for croup and dry coughs.

Cool mist is better. That way you can add hydrogen peroxide to it, and that is very helpful in overcoming lung infections. (colds etc.)
