I am a coach driver for another holiday company.Coach is by far the cheapest way to visit the tattoo and which ever hotel you select will be a "value for money"hotel.Try to get a hotel close to city centre so that you can soak up the atmosphere.A lot of coach companies will use hotels which are miles away from Edinburgh during the tattoo period, this is due to high demand and inflated prices so if you get a fairly central hotel you will be doing well.If your hotel is miles away then no problem as coach will drop and pick you up in Chambers Street which is just off the Royal Mile so quite close to Castle. If your driver offers to do a guided city tour take the opportunity, very entertaining and informative.
On night of tattoo wrap up warm and even take a blanket and a flask, the more comfortable you are the better you will enjoy

Edinburgh is a great city and well worth a visit even if the Tattoo isnt on. I would recommend the Apex City and Apex International hotels in the Grassmarket - they are quite contemporary but very comfortable and in a great place in the old town and close by for the tattoo.

If youre looking for something cheaper, there is a Premier Travel Inn around that area too which is very central but you would need to book well in advance, or you can stay at the Holiday Inn Express down in Leith, a couple of miles from the city centre but easily accessible by bus or taxi.

As for the Tattoo, have never actually been myself but have heard good reviews - the great thing is it is on at the same time as the Festival so the city is buzzing and has a great atmosphere - but as a result, hotels book up early.

Hope you enjoy

Book early to avoid being disappointed. The Malmaison hotel on the Shore is nice, but quite expensive.
Have a nice time. Edinburgh is a great place. The bus service is good and runs all night.

As I live here let me sudject that you stay away from the city centre when festival is on prices rocket up. I would stay in a hotel or B&B in Portobello or Leith, both 10 mins on buses, night service available. However I would book ASAP at everyone will have the same idea.
