I took my baby to the doctor on thursday and they said there's nothing they can do because he's so little. He can hardly breathe, he has a terrible cough, and i'm afraid he will stop breathing. He is still so happy and playful, laughing and talking.. but what should i do? any advice?

Oh, you poor thing! I have a newborn, I can only imagine how hard it must be to be so nervous about the breathing thing! Can you get another opinion from a different pediatrician? Also, I would put a nice warm mist vaporizer in his bedroom, or maybe have him sleep in a bassinet in your room so you can keep an eye on him. We use a vaporizer since our daughter was born very congested. We've also used saline drops and carefully used a nasal aspirator to get out some of the mucus that was loosened with the saline drops. Best of luck...I'm sure the cold will be over soon. It is so hard having an infant during cold season!

Use saline, and there is something called pediacare but it does not work. Just use saline drops in the nose,be sure and suck out the buggers, and a humidifier in the room. Most doctors now days do not like to give children medication unless there is an infection. Their body will develope and immunity to it, and besides that, there is really nothing they will give for a common cold anyway. Now if your baby gets this all the time you will need to ask the doctor to send your child to a specialist because it could be asthma, or if the cold goes past a week you need to take your baby back to the doctor.

There are cold medications for babies, atleast there were 3-5 years ago when my kids were babies! I think you should take him to another doctor. If he's wheezing and having trouble breathing, that's certainly something to be concerned about! The cold could have become bronchitis, or worse. Is he feverish? That would be a good indication that there's a secondary infection. The fact that he's playful is a good sign. My pediatrician's office would always ask these three questions: Is he eating? Is he sleeping? Is he playing?
If in doubt, just for your peace of mind, see a different doctor.

Did the Dr. prescribe anything?? If not the best thing to use (and it's 100% safe) is to mix warm water abot 1/4 cup with about 1/8 tsp of salt. Mix it together and use a medicine dropper to drom 1-2 drops in the babys nose. And then use a nasal aspirator to "suck' all those boogies out. This works wonders as a decongestant!! you can use it every 3-4 hours. The baby might gag alittle from the water going down its nose and throat, but it will work. Good Luck

Rsv.Take him back to the doctors and get him to do a nose swab for rsv.Taking him to the er may subject him to more illnesses unless you are very worried about his breathing.Keep lots of fluid in him,use a cool mist vaporizer in his room at night or even crack his window open a bit.Prop his crib up with a pillow at the top end so he sleeps on an angel an roll up a little blanket to put under his bumb so he does not slide down.Try not to have him flat on his back it is harder for him to breath and the mucas can cause him to choke easier.Use saline drops in his nose to help him breath as well,I drop them on a q-tip then put it in my babys nose. Some tylenol will help with any pain he has, watch for weezing and rapid breathing,I would be very concerned about rsv.Good luck and be sure to give him lots of love and comfort,he will be alright,it really sucks having a sick babe like this,I have been there, just getting over one now!

Thats good if he's still happy. It sounds like your just overly anxious. He wont stop breathing. Give him plenty of fluids. That will help loosen mucus. Plug in a vaporizer if you have one, and use nose saline for babies. You can give him some medicine to help dry up his nose also. That will help with the cough. Dont worry, he'll be fine in a couple of days.

Take your baby to the ER right away. They will take good care of him & tell you what to do once you get back home. A nose syringe is a must to keep his nasal passages open so he can breathe. You have every right to be concerned & you aren't over reacting, so don't let anyone say that your are. You know your baby & it's best to have him examined by a doctor. I'd be changing doctors, right about now. Nothing they can do for your baby because of his age? That's pathetic. Dress your baby warmly, don't forget a hat & blanket, & take him to the ER now!!!!

Good luck!

Please take me seriouslly here!! It's RSV season!!! What can seem like a cold can turn really nasty and make a baby really sick!
What the is so dangerous is that a child that small that is trying so hard to breathe can wear out REALLY fast and just stop!!
Yes you have every right to be concerned!!
Now, turn off your computer and get that baby to the ER NOW and demand that they at least check this O2 saturation before going and sitting in the waiting room.
Go!!!
Good luck!!!!!

Make sure you are suctioning the nose and making sure that sucking on a bottle is not a problem. If it becomes to where they are not eating well.. this could be a sign of ear infection and there is something they can do about that. I would take them to the ER if it gets to bad. That way something can be done. I don't understand doctors these days. Everyone is afraid to give antibiotics. I wish you luck.

I feel for you...when mine was 2 months old he had the flu...I used baby vix to help his breathing...if you cant find baby vix, use regular but put very little on his feet....get medicine for his cough...I used "little colds" cough and cold medicine and it helped a lot. The best thing to do is go to your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what to give him....I do that with my little one when it's after hours and I cant get ahold of the doctor....dont worry....pharmacist are trained and they wont suggest anything bad....In the mean time, give him fluids like water or apple juice....and lots of love...he'll get better. Good luck!
