Peter is the only correct answer so far. All quality cf lamps run at high frequency.

Scientific boy... You are wrong, halogen lamps run on ac, 240 volt mains or 12v. low voltage in the UK. (Unless you are talking about car headlights??)

There are two types, those with a replaceable tube run on AC like any strip light. The "Low Energy" type convert the 250AC to around 300 DC, and then run a transistorised high frequency inverter to run the tube at around 30 kHz or higher. That's where the high efficiency comes from.

The bulbs are driven by a 60 Hz AC signal. It's actually flashing on and off at 60 times per second because of the poitive and negative cycles of the AC signal.

normally in europe current is AC 220-230V 50 Hz
in USA is 110-120V 60Hz
so light bulbs use AC.

BUT

halogen lamps runs on DC, they have a AC-DC converter.

there are neon lamps that works with AC or DC

CFLs are produced for both AC input and DC input. DC CFLs are popular for use in recreational vehicles and off-the-grid housing
normal CFL light bulbs for houses ar AC of course.

They run on AC just like everything that you plug into a socket in your house. DC currant is found in batteries.
