The factory specs for your HP seem to indicate that it would run Vista, but I would recommend upgrading to 2GB ram. Vista calls for 1GB RAM in system requirements, but the rule of thumb for every version of Windows, from 95 on up, The O/S needs double what it says on the box to get out of it's own way. For example: WinXP stated it needed 128MB. Well a 500MHz Win98 machine with 128MB would run circles around a 1.8ghz WinXP system with 128MB.
With all this in mind, I fail to see why you would want to upgrade. Your system is only a little over a year old. Win XP is an up to date, yet tried and true O/S. You'd be better just to leave things as they are until it's time for a new machine.
One more factoid you may wish to consider before you upgrade to Vista...
EVERY version of Windows since Win3.x has been extremely flawed at release. you might be better off to wait a few months and let other people work out the bugs.
I hope this was helpful. God luck.

I got some advice regarding the vista program from a professor who specializes in computers at my university. He said it is never good to buy the first generation of a computer program because there are so many bugs and changes that will be worked out after the first relaease. And regarding your computer, it probably will not be able to handle vista, I got a new laptop in august 2005 and he said that it wouldnt be capable of handling vista.

If your computer is doing everything you want it to do then there's no need to change it, that includes the operating system. Since this system is a little over a year old I see no need to replace anything. Many programs mostly games don't like onboard video, you can upgrade that if you want. Adding RAM is also cheap and boosts performance considerably.

even though might want to you don't need to upgrade to windows vista if you are going to definetly upgrade to windows vista then i would sugest either waiting for the bugs to be worked out or for your computer to become out dated, because to fully take advantage of Windows Vista you will probably need to get new hardware aand in the long run it will be a waist of money because basic is just XP with a sidebar for gadgets and a few new programs if you realy can't wiat for your computer to be completly outdated then i would suggest waiting a month or two and getting Windows Vista Premium edition because that is much better than basic

why would anyone want to get Vista do your home work and find out just what problems there is with it, On the first day of it's release there was 22 Updates and thats for starters, and MS still have not got XP right and it has been out 5 years... Look for other FREE opratings systems there are plenty out there, That leave MS in the dark.... do a web search for Linux and do yourself a favor
