What is the United States Justice system doing to help eliminate crime?
We have prisons that are overcrowding with people that have committed the same types of crimes that have been committed throughout history (murder, sexual assault, narcotics etc.). They have also been committed for the repeatative reasons such as greed, fear and metnal illness (things that are not that uncommon for most people).
So what exactly are we doing to stop this cycle of wasted life?

I personally believe that entire Justice system needs to be reformed.

There's no question the system works better when an individual stays out of the system!!What would you propose we do when people commit these crimes?

The "major" violent crimes tend to be crimes of "necessity" or an attempt to wrest power from the individual who is victimized.

The majority of murders are crimes of passion, or done as a defensive act by the perpetrator. He robs a store because he needs cash, not out of greed. It may be to pay for some vice, or to pay for some other want/need that is going unfulfilled.

He kills the clerk in an effort to avoid identification w the crime..

Better education is most likely to help, but sadly the schools can only do so much without some cooperation & assistance from the parents at home.

Late edit- Mienk Educational issues are usually the root cause of an individual being unemployable or often underemployed. Before you claim that some communities just don't have enough jobs....I would respond it might be appropriate for some folks to move to where the jobs are.

The reason alcohol was made legal again wasn't about crime, it was about money. BIG MONEY earned by the businesses that produce it. Marijuana consumption isn't increasing at some new rate either. That occured a few decades ago for the most part, & has remained steady.

I do agree legalization should be strongly considered to stop prosecuting folks for something no more harmful (less) than alcohol. Sell it at the drug store to insure quality, & tax it like smokes....the govt has a new revenue source.

But as Chris Rock pointed out, marijuana comes predominantly from other countries & our govt doesn't want to enrich them.

The answers don't always rely just on the Justice System. How is such a system supposed to function if tax payers don't want to raise or even pay taxes? An example of this can be seen in Oregon. Voters have supported measures that would "get tough" on violent crime, which Measure 11 has tried to do, but when it came to increasing the taxes to support prison, the voters turned that down. What was the Justice System forced to do in Oregon, release prisoners because they didn't have the funds.

Another force outside of the Justice System is the economy. As the economy gets worse so does crime. When people can't afford to pay their bills or put food on their table they result to other and sometimes violent methods.

Finally, crime is a functional part of a society. It tells the society that it isn't working properly. Like my above example, if the society is not providing sufficiently for it's members they will resort to crime. Another way crime is functional is that it reflects changing social norms. An example of this a drug known as alcohol. It was banned in the United States and the huge rise in crime rate revolving around alcohol is was caused it to be legalized. Currently the U.S. is seeing a rise in Marijuana usage and it may be time for the U.S. to legalize it, rather than taking up jail space on Marijuana users and dealers when there isn't room for murderers, rapists, and narcotic abusers of very serious and dangerous drugs.
