When did J.K. Rowling's fame begin to spread? Was there a particular year (month or season, if possible!) when suddenly sales spiralled upwards and Harry Potter became the name on the lips of people all over the country? It must've been a gradual process, but I think there was a point when they stopped being obscure and the newspapers started talking about the popular new Harry Potter series.

Does anyone know roughly when that was?

After the first Potter book it immediatley became popular with the people of Britain. the 2cnd and 3rd books came out in consecutive years but not until the 4th book did her book really get the global hype that it gets now. as to when it got really popular id say around the release of the 3rd book(July 8, 1999) to a major boost in popularity around the world on the release of the 4th book(July 8, 2000) since then as you no potter has been a phenominon around the world up to now and the last release later this year

Since your asking when her fame begin to 'spread', i'd say after the fourth book. Because people around the globe at that point had only finished reading the first or the second of the series. She gradually started becoming famous after the fourth book was released in the UK.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone was an instant success and it was released, at least in the UK, in 1997. So I'm guessing, it was the month of the release of the first Harry Potter installment that lead to her great fame.

I think it was soon after she published the first Harry Potter book.
