Staying on Disney property has advantages that go beyond proximity.... one day a week each park opens early just for those staying on property.... a one to two hour headstart on everyone else and one day a week each park stays open late for those staying on property..... an added value that makes staying on property very attractive ...
On Property:
For the value resorts, Pop Century is the newest and those that stay here love it..
For the moderates, Coronado. is a convention hotel so it has more amenities then the other moderates.
At the deluxe resorts two categories here Wilderness Lodge is the least expensive of the deluxes but it is still a deluxe and many think it is fantastic compromise between moderate and Deluxe, Grand Floridian most expensive and this no question the finest on property!
If you want to have your own kitchen for food options... or an option for up to 6 people without need ing 2 rooms, check out the Wilderness cabins.... usually were we stay when we go... can save a few $$ and make own meal or two plus we have some with food "issues" and this makes that a bit easier to manage.
Off Property.....
Caribe Royale is a fantastic place that makes a huge reosrt property not feel that way.... all rooms are suites so it is easy to have a child asleep early or napping and still allow others to be awake in the room.... the pool complex is very nnice to spend a quiet afternoon at to unwind if needed. VERY close to Downtown Disney area.
Marriott World Canter is also very nice... it is a huge hotel that is mostly in one building.... this is one of the largest in Orlando ... and you can never go wrong at a marriott property... but if you dont like crowded hotels... this is not for you.
Hotels on International Drive...
Can be the best bargain around but unless it is a name hotel... (Holiday Inn., Best Western, Marriott for exapmple) that you are generally happy with in other cities, towns stay away.... these can range from really nice to fleabag hotels.... but this is the tourist area in Orlando... walking distance to many, many ,many restaurants, shops and small attractions all along this road..

It depends how much you are wanting to spend. I prefer staying onsite at Disney, especially if that is where you plan to spend the most time. It is just more convenient. Once Disney offers their discount, the price is close to what you would pay for an offsite hotel, but you know they will be clean, good transportation, etc.
For the value resorts, Pop Century is the newest, has a little nicer grounds, etc. Also, their bus system is a little better than the All Start resorts. All the values are the same price.
For the moderates, they all run the same price. Caribbean tends to be the most popular, but it is really large resort, so I would go for the preferred location if you don't want the extra walking. The Port Orleans resort is smaller and is a little more manageable than the other moderates. My favorite is Coronado, popular for conventions, etc. so it can be a little more quite and has a few little extras that make it more like a deluxe.
At the deluxe resorts, they are all different prices. Animal Kingdom and Wilderness Lodge are the least expensive of the deluxes, but aren't always the favorite of deluxes because they have a woods and safari theme, so the rooms can be dark, etc. The savannah view at Animal Kingdom is really great though. Then you have Beach Club, Yacht Club and Boardwalk that all run about the same rate. They are near EPCOT and are really nice. The themeing is beautiful and there is quite a bit to do in the area. Finally the monorail hotels are the most expensive, those being Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian with the Grand being the most expensive. All are really great, but the Grand and Polynesian are my favorites of all Disney hotels.
If you are needing a little more space the villas, wilderness cabin and the All Star Music suites offer that. All the Villas are wonderful and they are also tiered for pricing, Saratoga and Old Key West are the least expensive. The cabins are also nice if you can't quite afford the villas.
As far as offsite, I never really stay offsite unless it is for business, so I am not much help there.

Well, it would really help if we knew what yoru budget it was. I definitely recommend staying on property if you can. I always stay at Disney's Polynesian Resort. I've also stayed at Disney's Port Orleans Resort - Riverside. I will never stay at any other Resort. Disney's Polynesian Resort is perfect! In fact, it has the highest Guest return rate of any of the Resorts at Walt Disney World. It's really the best. It's absolutely gorgeous. The rooms are beautiful, as is the entire Resort, and many of the rooms offer incredible views of the Magic Kingdom and Cinderella Castle across the Seven Seas Lagoon. I really love all the transportation options at this Resort, too (transportation is complimentary). Most Resorts just offer shuttle service to the parks, but Disney's Polynesian Resort offers shuttle service, a water launch, and the Monorail pulls right up to the lobby. I love the Monorail. It's always quick. With all these transportation options it's much easier to get anywhere on property. The restaurants at Disney's Polynesian Resort are great, too. I really love the Kona Cafe. I eat there at least twice each time we go. The food's wonderful! The Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show (Polynesian Luau) is a lot of fun, also. And Disney's Polynesian is just a short walk away from Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa if you're in need of a spa treatment or would like to have a romantic dinner at one of the nicer restaurants, like Victoria & Albert's, Citricos, or Narcoossee's.
But, of course, Walt Disney World can accomodate any Guest. If you have a small budget look into staying at one of the Value Resorts. Walt Disney World has something for everyone and anyone.
Check out the Walt Disney World website to compare the Resorts and check out the prices. You can also order the free vacation planning DVD...

It totally depends on where you want to say.
I'm a travel agent and have been to Orlando 6 times now.
I prefer International Drive personally as it's got a wide choice of hotels and is a nice walk on a night with loads of restaurant, bars and attractions close by. There's Wonderworks, Ripleys, Wet n Wild etc on I Drive to visit.
Hotels on International Drive I would reccommend are -
Quality Inn International. Reasonable price and fantastic location. A great base to stay. Slap bang in the centre of I Drive so you can walk to anywhere from there.
Wyndham International. A 4 star hotel again in a great location. Almost opposite Quality Inn so again a great location. It's a better quality but more expensive. It has lagoon style pools etc. Really nice.
Another place to stay in Kissimmee. I would NOT reccommend to stay here at all. It's not great. A massive highway runs through it and it's not as nice as I Drive.
Hotels in the Disney resort. The Pop Century are the most reasonable hotels.
I would personally prefer the Boardwalk area hotels as it's a lovely area.
If you have a massive budget you have to stay in the Grand Floridian. It's amazing but expensive.

It all depends on your budget. Disney hotels that time of year typically start out at about $100 a night (the value resorts - all star and pop century). There are great perks to staying on Disney property though! You have free transportation from the airport to your hotel (and back again), free transportation to anywhere on Disney property, extra magic hours for Disney parks (you get to enter or stay an hour early or later at a Disney park each day), you can take advantage of the Disney Dining Plan which can save you a lot of money, you can have any souveniers delivered right to your room for free (package delivery program - ask any cast member for details), and so much more.
If you are interested in staying on Disney property, I recommend you visit Disney's official site at http://www.disneyworld.com and click on resorts. Be sure to take the virtual tour to see which theme and budget suits your family best.
My personal favorite is the Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is one of Disney's Delux Resorts, and is more expensive than most, but it is by far the most beautiful resort Disney has. They also have great food! Try Boma - located on the bottom floor.
If you would like to save money, there are dozens of nearby hotels and resorts that are excellent. Two that I recommend are the Best Western Lakeside and the Lake Suites - both located off Hwy 192 in Kissimmee. The Best Western Lakeside has rooms for $59 in the off-peak season. They have 3 sparkling pools, a min. golf course, a decent buffet-style restaurant, friendly staff and is located 3 minutes from the Walt Disney World Resort.
The Lake Suites are ideal for a large traveling party. They are "condo-style" hotel rooms complete with a full kitchen! You can really save money if you prepare a lot of your meals rather than eating out each night.

The cheapest hotels at Disney are the All-Star Resorts or the Pop Century Resort. (Personally, I'd rather stay at the All-Star Music or Movies Resorts.) They're pretty good hotels too. They have nice pools, a food court, and something else I think. They're price is between $80-$85 a night.

The hotels in Lake Buena Vista are nearer to Disney than I-Drive & Kissimmee areas,so any in LBV really. We stayed in the Hawthorne Suites which were gorgeous-couldn't fault them.LBV is a lovely quiet area with bars, restaurants, shops etc..but it's less touristy despite being virtually on top of Disney.

I went in 2000 and found the Best Western on International Drive a great value for money. It's also close to all of the Oralndo attractions. Disney and SeaWorld parks are only a short drive away.

We stayed at the Quality Inn International on I Drive. It is just a travel lodge type, but the rooms are fine, air con, fridge etc and a decent buffet restaurant on site and is in the main area of I Drive.
You could of course pay alot more and stay at one of the Disney resort hotels where as we only paid £400 each for the fortnight inc flights ( with First Choice )
