I've played the guitar for a few years now, but I don't think I've gotten as far as I should have. I can't really play solos or anything, and my chord progressions can be a little slow. So what should I absolutely know how to play or do?

You should be able to comfortably do a three chord progression. You should know all of the major chords and at least two ways to finger them. When you can play "Classical Gas" and "Stairway to Heaven", you won't need to ask this question again.

you've got to cover all your bases, learn some blues style riffs like some old Danzig, learn some metal riffs like some "cemetary gates" by Pantera. Learn some easygoing acoustic songs like some Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan. Cover your country licks with some Johnny Cash or Hank Williams. To work on your rythm, learn the basslines to some songs, bass is way more rythm oriented.

Solos aren't everything, solos are way overrated, I have ben playing for ten years and I have been in several bands, for me solos aren't fun to play, cause you have to concentrate on the solo and not on your performance. I'd personally rather just not do solos. it's more fun that way.

hope I helped.

Chords chords and more chords. They can only help. And once you've mastered the major chords everything will be so much easier. :]
