You could be a nurse but yeah, i do think you need a PhD in order to really get in depth.
Why would you want to work with insane people though? Seems like it would be a very depressing and dangerous career.

You do not need a PH.D to work in the mental health field, It totally depends on the job you want. There are many levels of employment at a mental health facility. You can get by with anything from a high school diploma, lower level jobs( direct care and aides, so forth) , to a PH.D , the highest level. So decide what kind of job you are suited for and see what qualifications are required. Best of luck in a rewarding field. Many good sites to check out on the web.

Like others have said, that really depends on the capacity in which you would like to work with people. If you'd like to work hands on in a health care setting that you could become a psychiatric nurse, which is a two to four year program in some areas. If you'd like to work with families, you could get education in social work, anything from a three year diploma to a five year degree. You could also go into addiction or mental health counselling which usually consists of a two to three year diploma or a three to four year degree. If you want to work exclusively with children, a three or four year degree in child and youth care will help you acheive that goal.
If you want to become schooled in comprehensive mental health, neuroscience or become a clinical psychologist, psychology could be the field for you. You can specialize in several areas in psychology, such as developmental, social, personality, theory, clinical, experimental, organizational, etc. Remember though that you will need either a Masters or PhD, depending what state or province you live in but it's usually a PhD, in Psychology to be a practicing psychologist. But if you aren't interested in taking the eight to ten years of extra schooling it will take to get a PhD, clearly there are many other fields which you could get into to work with the mentally ill. Check out the American Psychological Association's website for more information on this, and info on jobs you can get with a Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees in psychology. www.apa.org

It would depend on how you want to work with the clients. For direct care of the clients, you probably need a Bachelor's degree, but some places may only require an Associates. If you want to do therapy you will need a masters and probably need to be licensed depending on the hospital. There is also psychiatric nursing where you would work with the patients. They have both LPN's (2 year degree) and RN's (4 year).

There are many jobs to be had in a mental health facility. You have doctors, nurses, counselors, maintenace workers, orderlies, security, food service providers, etc. All of these positions allow you to interact with the patients in some capacity. For some of these positions, you obviously need a degree. In others, you do not. So figure out exactly what it is that you want to do. Then phone a local university or mental health facility and simply inquire. Good luck to you. It's nice to see someone who really wants to make a difference in the lives of others.
