Affirmative Action or "Positive Discrimination" is a policy of preferential treatment given to minorities backed by government force. The idea behind it was to reduce discrimination by giving non-white citizens a better chance at getting a job or enrolling in school, however critics argue that it has increase discrimination in all facets of American society.

An example of Affirmative Action; if you are white then imagine applying for a job and being better qualified than a non-white applicant. That person will be selected over you because of his/her race.

Prison population means the amount of people in a prison. Or it could mean the total number of people locked up in the country.

Affirmative action means that coorporations and institutions must hire at a ratio that represents the population in the community regarding race or sex. This means that if 2 in 10 people in the community are of a certain decent (European, Asian, African ... etc) Then the employees getting hired should be of the same ratio.

This is to end prejudical hiring processes.

Prison Population represents the total number of prisoners within the prison. It means all those incarcerated within the facility.
Affirmative action is a attempt to combat racism by requiring a certain number of ethnic students to be in colleges. So for example, a black student can be less qualified than a white student but the black student would get priority if the college did not have enough black students. It could be called a reverse racism and there is a growing support to get this removed from the law, but currently its required that all schools who receive government money/ tax exemptions have to have this policy in place.

No. ..I don't agree.. I believe in equality under the law for all. Affirmative action may have been started as well meaning, but it does serious damage to the internal thought process. It sends a subliminal message that you'ree not equal in the first place. You are. You are a capable person, and affirmative action sends the message that you aren't. You have the value of "1", the same as everyone else. I have noticed "affirmative action" used in birth order--one child introduced as the "youngest, one as the first born..the middle kid often is introduced with some accomplishment or description other than the order they were born. It sends the subliminal message that the middle child has to be compensated for because they 2nd born was not a valuable as first or last. Parents do this with loving intentions but the subliminal message is still there, and it reeks havoc with self-esteem. Also, did you notice the contradiction in the quote you cited? How can something be egalitarian and preferential at the same time?

Prison population is simply the people who are in prison. It means all the people who are incarcerated at a given moment in a given geographical area.

Affirmative action is a policy by which certain schools, programs, and employers are required to meet quotas in their selection process generally on the basis of race or gender. This means that a university for example is has to make sure that at least 5% of the students it accepts are African American. The idea behind the policy is to try and counter discrimination with "affirmative" discrimination. If it is generally harder say for women to find jobs as police officers, make it mandatory for police departments to hire women.
