1) Use the trams and metro - they are cheap and easy. I had some horrendous problems with taxis.
2) Try and get a tip from a local for where to eat - the food is largely not great (cheap cuts of meat, pale veg etc) - if you are eating around the city, the nearer you get to the centre of the old town the more expensive it is, but broadly speaking its cheap.
3) Same goes for beer - the more likely UK tourists are to be there, the higher the prices so places round Charles bridge and Wencelas Sq are more expensive, but again its relative - its quite a cheap city
4) Wrap up warm - its bloody freezing there!
Have a good time!

Was in Prague a couple of years ago for my mates stag do, its a crackin spot, but depending on what type of trip your after there are a few places to head.
If you can find the tescos in the centre of Prague there should be a bar down a street directly in front of you that is probably the cheapest place in the city to drink, although stay away from the toilets, (Trainspotting comes to mind).
Plenty of great restaurants, but check out the bridges and the castle area with their fantastic views.
One final thing, Prague completely changes at night, its one the most impressive cities I've been in during the day, but at night in the centre its full of drug dealers and guys trying to get you into the strip clubs, but maybe thats just cos we were on a stag do and we attracted them.
Either way is a brilliant place that will leave a lasting impression.

we don hate British and we are not that stupid either .. LOL
we can actually distinguish British, Australian and American accent.
As for your question ..
The farther away from the center you go the cheaper it is. Also I agree that Prague during the night is for the party animals not for tourists that seek pleasure in exploring the city in rather educating way ..
Anyway, hope, you'll enjoy your stay.
