One of the weaknesses of SAP XI is, that it has no communication module except HTTP, FTP and Mail available. It can be integrated more or less directly with AS1 AS2 AS3, but not with OFTP, ANX, X44, ENX and so on. Therefore you always need an additional provider.
TIBCO would be one of those providers, but their disadvantage is, that the software is not directly integrated in SAP and you might need adjustments for each SAP upgrade, as well as to monitor an additonal system.
In my opinion XI will grow slowly and providers like TIBCO, ACTIS, Seeburger, Itemfield and so on will remain on the market and offer more and more integrated solutions in XI.
For a company that is running only SAP ERP systems it might be a good solution, for companies using other ERP systems like MFG Pro, Oracle, Baan etc. it will be better to focus on external providers.
Apart from the integration of B2B processes, XI can be used for other kinds of integration, that TIBCO might not offer, like integration between 2 ERP systems directly (of one company), integration of structured and unstructured datasources (PDF, CSV, HTML, XML files / sources).
Here the advantage is on the XI side, but XI seems to be too expensive for a wide distribution at the moment.
