OK, I just had to reformat one of my computers after a virus killed it. I recently moved, which means I cannot (grrr) find my Win XP Home edition CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. Is there away around this? Makes me mad because this IS A LEGAL COPY! Oh, and my other computer is a Dell and I can't use its certificate. Of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just had to reformat one of my computers after a virus killed it. I recently moved, which means I cannot (grrr) find my Win XP Home edition CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY, located on the book the original XP software came in. Is there away around this so I can finish installing Windows? Makes me mad because this IS A LEGAL COPY! I get halfway into reinstalling XP and it asks for the Cerficate numbers, which I can't find in my house. Oh, and my other computer is a Dell and I can't use its XP CD. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you mean you don't have your key code, it may be on your computer somewhere, usually on a paper tag inside the case. If you bought the computer new, did you register it with Microsoft? If so, you may be able to retrieve the key code from them if you can prove you are the registered owner of that copy of WinXP.

There are ways to replace key codes that are not totally legal (copyright violations), but try the legal way first.

First take a blank label then call microsoft they have a real person at a 1 800 number who will provide you with a new code. Then write in on the blank label and attach it to your computer somewhere where you will always have it. It should be attached to your hard drive too since it will always be there. -The number is (800) 936-5700
