Yes, I have beaten a computer on the easier levels. Game Boy Advance has a "Virtual Kasparov" cartridge that I have been playing for a month. I really have enjoyed it. There are 31 people to beat on it before you play Garry Kasparov. I am happy to say that I am now playing Garry. But on Chessmaster for the PC, I am having a rough time beating "Josh" at age six with a 1200 elo rating! :( I am also trying to beat Radio Shack's Chess Companion on level B5 which means I've beaten the 1st 12 levels on it.

One thing I will say as a word of encouragement to you if you are losing against a computer. If you really try to understand what made you lose, and keep playing over and over, you will find that you are able to last longer in a computer game which is a sign of improvement even if you still lose. Then, when you play a human again, you will find that they are not as tough as they once were for you because you have been conditioning yourself to "see" better while working with the computer. My wife says I've gotten harder to beat since I've been playing computers. So, don't lose heart.

Keep in mind that computers do not generally play like real people. They don't make blunders like real people do. So, be sure to mix it up and play real people from time to time or else you could get very discouraged. You will find that playing a real person after having wrestled with a computer can be very refreshing and a lot more fun.

Good luck! I hope this was helpful. "Castle early!"

sure can....but only realy great players can beat a good program (fritz 9 for example) on it's strongest setting. Do a search on Kasparov and Deep Blue....interesting story of man vs. machine.
