Hmm, can think of plenty of romantic novels, but sweet's a bit difficult without getting into the region of crap. I'd have to say Jane Ayre, Far from the Madding Crowd, Tom Jones (for comedy as well as romance), A Tale of Two Cities is very dramatic romantic, but not sweet in the least!! I found Memoirs of a Geisha quite romantic in a weird kind of way actually.

All of these were books famous enough to be turned into movies.

Helen, I'm not sure I'd recommend "Lady Chatterly's Lover" to someone who's asked for "sweet-romantic." Nor "Romeo and Juliet" for that matter. I think the better answer comes from your first respondent. Also, though I think he is a hack writer, many teen age girls like Nicholas Sparks, for weepy, sickly-sweet romances.
