I maybe relocating from southern California to Dallas. I would like to be close to Dallas Market Center as I would have to be there a few times a month for work. I would appreciate suggestions on nice neighborhoods near DMC that would be good for a single caucasian woman in her late thirties with no kids. My price range is 450-650K. I have a large dog and want a nice yard. I like new construction but hate being on top of my neighbors, which California is known for. So nice house, nice yard for the dog, and not too close to your neighbors.

Highland Park is popular amongst Californians. It's an older, established area of Dallas. Also the Valley Ranch/Las Colinas area is popular amongst most from the West Coast. The Pacific styled homes and rolling hills are somewhat reminiscent of So Cal. Since the cost of living is 30% less here in Texas, you will be able to find a very nice home within your price range. If you want to live really close to DMC there is a beautiful little neighborhood called Perry Heights with fabulous tudor style (as well as modern mixed in) homes. It's tucked between Lemmon Ave. and Cedar Springs, about 2 miles (if that) from DMC. I live close by and bought a town house and walk my dog in Perry Heights. There is also a nice park with tennis courts adjacent to the neighborhood and the property taxes probably wouldn't be as high as Highland Park.

Like the other person said, though, Highland Park and University Park are also really nice. About 2 miles north of Perry Heights. The Uptown area in my opinion is the best part of Dallas...has character and doesn't look like a Playschool pre-fab neighborhood. Mostly singles in the late 20's-30's but all the new homes being built are condos and townhomes. Some have a dog park like mine but if you want a yard, go for a house.

Note: You are probably used to paying ridiculous amounts of money for a house so of course when you look for a house here you'll be dumbfounded at how much space you get and how nice everything is for the cost.

That being said, you can find a really beautiful home for less than $450K which means more $$ for savings. We see a lot of people from CA and NY relocate here and don't realize they can actually save a lot...they are so used to high housing costs so they make a lateral move without realizing they don't need to spend that much.

Funny, I'm thinking of relocating to Northern California from Dallas...I'm having major sticker shock right now...

You might want to check out the Park Cities. University Park and Highland Park are upscale neighborhoods that are surrounded by Dallas.

However, the area is landlocked, so it's not growing, and lots for new construction (if there are any left) probably aren't that big. It's becoming popular for folks to knock down old stuff and build McMansions, which sounds awful costly.

And if you're not a Bush fan, you might want to avoid the area. The Bush Presidential Library probably will be at Southern Methodist University, which is in University Park. The library has gotten a lot of press around here lately.

Some good neighborhoods near Dallas Market Center are Turtle Creek, Perry Heights, Park Cities area. My personal favorite area in Dallas is Lakewood/M Streets district. The homes are older and have a lot of character. The yards are larger, and the homes have a good bit of space between them. Park Cities is a little crowded.
