Scientists had long known that bacteria could be found consuming decay products and producing a gas called dimethyl sulfide, or DMS, in places where plankton and marine plants such as seaweed were dying. This pungent gas is what gives ocean air "sort of a fishy, tangy smell," said study author Andrew Johnston of the University of East Anglia.

answer: it is caused by a gas produced by genes of ocean-dwelling bacteria. This gas is called Dymethil Sulfide or DMS. The bacteria that releases this gas could be found in in places where planktons, marine plants such as seaweeds are dying. This pungent gas (DMS) gives the ocean air an odorous, fishy and tangy smel.

As several people have said, the compound is DMS, which as yet is not available to use as a fragrance to make your home/office smell like the seaside. But if you want to get close to the scent, essential oil of seaweed, which is an absolute, is available from The Fragrant Earth company in Glastonbury. Until 3 months ago, I lived in a place about as far from the sea as you can get in Britain and my bottle of seaweed absolute was my "holiday in a bottle" when I craved an afternoon at the beach.
