i just went to one and he adjusted my back and it was amazing. he said that the nerve being crushed from my back being out of line was the nerve controlling my stomache. he asked if i was experiencing any heartburn or indigestion and i laughed because i've been having a lot of heartburn and tums didn't help. then someone told me that they aren't considered doctors. huh?

This is not an easy question to answer. It is difficult because of you and your perception. When people use the word "doctor" they are generally referring to a Medical Doctor. What some people don't know is that a college degree of PhD entitles the person who earned it to the title "doctor". In my high school we had a teacher who had a PhD in linguistics. He taught Spanish and chose to be addressed as "Doctor So-and-so". Dr. Henry Kissinger is not a medical doctor but holds a PhD in something. A number of my college professors held PhDs; all were entitled to the title "Doctor". Some chose it, some chose Mr., Mrs., Miss. and one asked to be addressed by his first name. So you see it can run the gambit.

Chiropractors are entitled to use "Doctor" but that doesn't mean they are a medical doctor. In fact very very few of them are. The main difference that I can see is that a person licensed as a chiropractor can not, by law, write prescriptions for drugs. A medical doctor can and a dentist can. A psychiatrist can but you will find psychiatry is a specialty and the psychiatrist is a medical doctor first then goes into psychiatry.

So the short answer to your question is "yes", a chiropractor is a real doctor. However, they are seldom a medical doctor.

I hope that helps a little bit. I'll grant you it can be confusing. If I can do more, better explain or provide better examples please contact me through my profile.

Chriopractors don't go to med school, and therefore don't earn an M.D. (med doctorate) They have their own professional school, through which, the earn a D.C. (doc of chiro)

Adjust at your own risk. They're totally capable of of cracking & adjusting whatever you've got out of alignment. (if you're into that sorta things)... I certainly wouldn't let them surgically alter anything.

Does this help?
