They have to wait for what ever is causing the pain to pass through the intestines. This is very dangerous thing because if it's a blockage it could cause a condition called colic and the intestines will acctually loop around themselves and burst. Which is why if you notice your horse in distress like not eating or drinking or biting at it's sides or rolling alot you need to call a vet immediately.

Since a horse has such a small stomach and "NO" gall bladder, an owner must be careful in ensuring the right minerals, nutrients, fat, water and other foods that the horse must eat, is given in right proportions. This entails making sure that the hay, grain, etc. is free of mold, rodents, and other things that might possibly cause upset stomach. In my life, I have never 'seen' or "heard" of a horse with upset stomach - and never have I heard that surgery was required for a horse with an upset stomach. But then - there is always something new to learn in the world if information is factual.

Horses can die from colic (upset GI tract) so it's best to call a vet. Mild cases are treated with pain medication, in moderate cases sometimes mineral oil is used to help things pass, severe cases may need emergency surgery to save the horse's life.

They try everything to ease the pain. Laying down, rolling, switching their tail, looking at their stomach, and kicking at their stomach are all signs of colic. Colic can be caused be a few different things including a choke (or blockage in the esophagus), an impaction (blockage in the the intestines), poisonous foods, moldy hay, worms, dehydration, and malnutrition just to name a few. No matter what, if you see signs of colic in your horse call the vet. If you don't catch it early enough their intestines will tie up and loose blood flow causing the cells to die.

Any type of stomach discomfort in horses is called colic. It can be anything from mild cramping that eases away on its own, to a severe blockage in the intestines that requires surgery.

Right,! Horses cant throw up, so if its a mild case, usually you can get some medicine to clear it up, but if its a bad colic...surgery can be required

If you notice your horse looking at its belly or trying to roll. Call your vet and start walking it. Walking helps move things along for your horse.

Its true they cant throw up! But in bad cases (and unfortunately my mare had a bad case) the vet can help with it. He stuck a long tube down my mare's nose and gave her some minerals and this nasty green looking stuff came back up the tub. They can't throw up but if theres a tube up their nose it sure can come out. It was gross but that was the only option since she couldn't throw up or poop it out.
