I don't know how much they cost in the UK but I suggest you contact the British Hamster Association (http://www.britishhamsterassociation.org.uk/) or the National Hamster Council (http://www.hamsters-uk.org/) and see if there are any breeders in your area. Here in the US, it is actually the same cost or cheaper to buy a hamster from a breeder than the pet store and for a better quality hamster.

A couple of pounds, not too expensive.
I would reccomend the Russian Dwarf Hamster, they are extremely cute and lively lil' critters.
