I am a technology professional and have access to all kinds of high powered corporate security software. Most of it is just expensive crap so I personally use Free AVG by Grisoft:

It works, it's not a system hog, and best of all, it's FREE! I have used it for years and have never had any virus or spyware attacks.
The best way to avoid security intrusions of any kind is to use Firefox or Netscape browsers and eMail instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook. I used Netscape exclusively for years but have recently discovered Firefox and LOVE it. Both are much more functional than IE and much safer.
You can get Firefox here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-us/firefox/
You can get Netscape here:
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/
I hope this helps. Take care and best of luck!

Norton is composed with 3 or 4 different programs running concurrently. It does use a lot of memory. But you might also want to check if you actually have a virus as well. Norton is not the best security out there and by experience I have had many misses with Norton.
However on the other side: how old is your PC, How much RAM do you have ? nowadays, the types of software used and the updates made to the operating systems and hardware utilize lots of memory and a minimum of 512 MB is barely enough to keep up. Also, one very simple things that most users overlook is heat. If your PC or Laptop heats up a lot, it does slow down your OS tremendously because of the Fans kicking in at a higher rate. Make sure to undust the fan areas, and keep your PC cool.
Your DSL provider offers probably McAFee or some other sort of Antivirus, it's fine but it will be the same exact commotion: You will have to download it onto your hardrive anyway and run it from there. Honestly I tried Both Softwares and I was very displeased with their performance (hogs memory, inefective)
I suggest you use Grisoft AVG or ClamAntivirus. Add a firewall like ZoneAlarm for example and you should be all set. Of course those are personal choices, and it helps that they are totally free to download and use. They also are much better than the former ones I discussed above.

I got rid of Norton when I still had 8 months of service left. I have a friend whose computer was wrecked by Norton. It caused me problems as well but nothing too serious. I now use what Microsoft provides for free with Windows XP & have never had a problem since. I suggest you do the same.

Totally! Get rid of NAV and make sure you never install McAfee because it's even worse. There are MANY free anti-virus scanners out there. AVG is the best free one. Those commercial programs try to make things pop-up and make you buy more stuff - almost as bad as Real Player (almost, haha!)

Get rid of Norton and get a free anti-virus software. Get either AVG or Avast!, they are both pretty good.

Go to c:/programs and settings/ and look for anything with Norton, Liveupdate or Symantec on it, delete it. If that doesn't work download CCleaner and see if that clears it.
