I've got to get a really heavy freezer up the basement stairs. There will be 2, maybe 3 of us. Should we use ropes? Or use a dolly? Or a long board to try to slide it? What is the easiest and the safest way (so it doesn't fall back down on anyone)? Thanks.

Chest or upright? Either way, don't get below it! Of course, fist empty it out. The best and safest way is to call a mover. Next to that is to access a GOOD dolly with a strong strap. Actually, everything you stated in your question could be used to make it easier and safer. Boards nailed to steps to form a smooth ramp for the dolly wheels with steps left uncovered on ends to walk up. Rope to anchor off with if and when you need a break part way up the stairs. Just make certain there is room at the top of the stairs to get the thing out thru once it's up. Measure first. If it is a chest type be sure there's room to stand it on end if needed. Also, after all this jostling around let it set in it's correct position for several hours before restarting.

You can get an appliance dolly at a moving store like U-Haul.
Also, how about a 12 pack and three friends?
